Infographic services

Excellent artworking skills underpin just about every creative project I do. I generate great-looking, accurate artwork, and pretty fast too. Even if I am not actually designing a site or interactive solution, it is essential to be able to work with created artwork, and in some cases modify it significantly to optimise it for construction and multi-platform delivery.

Arty, not farty

When it comes to designing for you, I will always aim to deliver a graphical solution that really answers the brief.

Arty? – maybe. Effective? – definitely. But never, ever farty.

You can rely on me

As you might expect, all of the artwork on this site is designed and generated by me. I’ve been using the main Adobe creative applications for many, many years, and this enables me to work seamlessly with almost any creative outfit. I’m a whizz with Photoshop and pretty handy in Illustrator, too. I also posses a very strong skill-set in Fireworks.

Better workflow and teamwork

Another crucial advantage I offer is the ability to work effectively with other designers, not only helping them to turn designs into pixel-perfect websites, but also working with them to solve workflow issues as well. Check out this article about using Keeping your Illustrator artwork manageable, and this one about using Illustrator with Flash.

Fireworks vs Photoshop – who wins?

My answer to the age-old Fireworks vs Photoshop debate is “I use both!”. I’ve taken the time to learn Fireworks thoroughly, as I did with Photoshop, and it really pays dividends.

My other answer is that it is the artworker or designer that counts far more than the choice of application, in many cases. Arguably, Fireworks IS the better solution for many web projects, but the trouble is some designers don’t use it effectively, because they don’t know it well enough… whereas I do.

Client-facing skills

After many years delivering complex projects, I know that managing client relationships can often be the single most important factor that determines success.

I don’t really believe there is such a thing as a difficult client — if there are difficulties, in my experience it is because fundamental issues have not been identified early enough or as they arise – often as a direct result of ineffective client-facing skills.

I always take a great deal of time to get to know my clients, understand their needs, issues, challenges — and their opportunities — and then work with them to achieve excellent results.

When facing you, or your clients on your behalf, I am:-

  • welcoming and supportive;
  • inquisitive about their business and how they see the world;
  • knowledgeable and able to communicate this in a user-friendly and helpful manner;
  • able to think of innovative approaches to solve problems;
  • able to project a positive representation of your agency, design studio or business;
  • able to create a lasting and positive impression that reflects well on your business.

Needless to say, when you hire me, you will be my direct client and you can be assured of my discretion and respect for your confidentiality.

It is often the case than when partnering with an agency or design studio, my client-facing skills come out top of the list for positive feedback. Sometimes, a single, really effective meeting can be pivotal to the success of a project.

The benefits of my approach include:-

  • Greater client confidence in the project at hand
  • Greater collaboration with the client to solve issues
  • Faster turnaround times
  • Better mutual understanding and tolerance
  • More beneficial focus on project goals and less on personalities
  • Increased customer satisfaction
  • Repeat business

These are just some of the benefits. I am also capable of interpreting technical, design and other types of information and presenting these to you or your client in way that is easy to understand, meaningful and useful in business terms.

Creative Workflow

As new digital platforms replace or supersede old ones, one of the challenges for my clients is how to integrate new expertise into existing workflows. In order to fully take advantage of new opportunities presented by mobile, social media, web analytics etc, workflows do need to be updated.

I work with some of the biggest departments in the UK and abroad, helping them with digital/creative workflows, project/production management, client-facing and account/relationship handling. Very often these areas are inter-linked and looking at these holistically can bring enormous benefits.

Here’s a summary of the benefits of the workflow service I offer:-

  • Objective analysis of your current workflow, end-to-end
  • Holistic analysis of workflow in relation to business needs and new opportunities
  • Integration of new expertise and associated processes
  • Facilitation of inclusive and highly effective workshops to capture issues/opportunities
  • Key insights into how to resolve critical problem areas
  • Tactical action plans to resolve issues
  • Project management support of workflow optimisation and re-engineering
  • Change management support
  • Excellent, measurable return on investment

Sounds good, but how does it work in practice?

Here’s a good example: One of my clients is a supplier to retail. They were about to lose a £5m contract with a well known high-street retailer. I was asked to look at their entire creative/digital workflow, including design, design management, asset use, software, market intelligence, client-facing and account handling. I was able and speak with all key players across affected departments, and after a series of short, informed and focused workshops, we quickly identified some key areas that needed attention.

Solutions were identified and then implemented, and as a result my client was able not only to reduce costs, but crucially to fulfil all of their client’s previously unsatisfied expectations.

After my intervention, the contract was retained, and a host of other key benefits were achieved:

  • Higher creative performance at reduced cost
  • Improved quality and relevance of designs through better use of market intelligence
  • Reduced number of rejected SKUs (stock-keeping units)
  • Freeing up of creative resources for other projects
  • Better collaboration between marketing and design departments
  • Improved task management
  • Integration of social media within workflow
  • More confident client-facing and account handling
  • Better customer satisfaction
  • Secured repeat business
  • Enhanced reputation

Just one example of how an objective look from an independent expert can have a huge impact on your creative process and your business.

The big mistake many companies make

There is no doubt that any creative or digital production process, or workflow, needs the right personnel and crucially the right management to keep everything on track and running smoothly.

Yet the mistake some companies often make is to bring in a new project manager or production manager without looking at, or being willing to change, the more fundamental, underlying people and process issues that prevail.

Failure to evaluate your current processes and properly identify structural or personnel issues, and failure to then follow this up with the appropriate changes can render even the most capable project manager non-effective, making a new appointment fairly useless…

People, Processes, Tools and Products

It is important to bear in mind that each agency, IT dept, creative studio, manufacturer, publisher, PR company, retailer, software house, web developer etc will have different requirements for their businesses. There is no one-size fits all, and this is probably why, for example, using off-the-shelf project management software designed for creative studios rarely works without a high degree of customisation.

Small companies of 2-50 people are by definition often niche operations, and even if they have a “standard” menu of services, how these are delivered can vary enormously from outfit to outfit. Add to this the differing needs of the sectors they serve, e.g FMCG, Retail, Media, Corporate, Public Sector and it is easy to see that there is no panacea that will solve all workflow problems.

This is why, when I am looking to help an organisation improve their workflow, the starting point is the business model the company is operating. For example, many companies have dedicated teams and roles who must accommodate varying workloads, and meet excess demand by bringing in freelancers. Others may build teams around a project, from scratch.

Large companies may even have a combination of approaches.

This is where I can help. For more information about optimising your workflow for smoother, faster and better quality production, get in touch now.

Project Management

I’m a digital project manager, fluent in the language of business, UX, code and design.

With my background, I am in the ideal position to capture and interpret client needs and present viable solutions. Because I also understand the world of development and design, I can communicate effectively with coders and designers in terms they can understand, which helps them deliver to the client what is really needed.

Having a truly rounded experience of all aspects and roles within digital production gives me a deep understanding of creative and technical processes. This, combined with a strong methodical approach to managing projects, from planning through to successful completion, helps me bring projects in that actually meet the business goal.

My in-depth experience from client-facing to nitty-gritty coding also means I can solve problems easily and quickly to smooth production hassles and maintain client confidence.

Project management experience

  • Delivery of multiple projects on brief, on time and to the agreed budget – using methodologies appropriate to successful completion
  • Full management of the project life-cycle, from business case to delivery
  • Excellent client-facing skills, a steady hand in uncertain waters bringing confidence and a voice of authority
  • Resourcing of talent and skills, and building teams
  • User journeys, Quality Assurance, functional testing and User Acceptance Testing

Types of project

  • Web: corporate, consumer-facing and campaign micro-sites
  • Build of email campaigns; including tracking, analytics and subscription management
  • Complex technical builds using a variety of software platforms
  • Flash banners, components and XML integration
  • WordPress development
  • Custom software design for a variety of projects
  • Content management systems including template generation and integration
  • Photography and Art-direction
  • Build, design and delivery of touch screen kiosk interfaces

Clients

My client experience covers a range of leading UK brands. I have delivered to some very well known brands including PowerGen, BAA, BAT, Hallmark amongst others. I am equally at home with smaller clients and thriving agencies.

Project management methodologies

My work is informed by a variety of popular methodologies, including Prince 2, Agile & Scrum although my experience is that the needs and type of project, and also the existing approaches within client organisations, will determine the methods used.

A further factor when deciding upon an appropriate project management approach, is the existing workflow and processes, which can often be the deciding factor as to which method is most likely to achieve results.

Common skills I deploy on most if not all of my projects are estimation of project costs, issues, risks, strategy, resourcing, milestones, cash-flow analysis, financial reporting and budgeting.
